Well my new machine is here on the desk and I have struglled for 2 days already to get software loaded. I'll tell you later about MS Office 2007 but for now I have just installed Eclipse and CF Eclipse. I found an interesting blog post about a way to install eclipse plugins. Despite the title of the post its not too easy but this method has a big advantage. You can uninstall the plugin or copy to another instance very easily.
Basicly all the plugin code sits in its own directory and a sparate .link file points to it. That way you don't end up with a starnge collection of files in the plugins and features where you can't see what's what.
Unfortunately it doesn't always work.
For me it worked fine with CFEclipse and Aptana but JSEclipse did not show up as a perspective in eclipse and XMLBudy seems not to have the required file structure. Am I doing somthing wrong or expecting the wrong thing?
I ordered some new PC hardware on Friday. The new machines will be the basis of our new development environment.
My current desktop machine has been a bit sick recently and the only way to recover it would be a complete rebuild. Windows Explorer becane Windows Exploder, every time I tried to run more than one copy of it it would crash and take the desktop down with it. Most times the destop would recover but not every time.
I addition the 800MHz machines seem to struggle with Flex2 and AJAX. I ran the vista hardware check on my current machine and it failed on every count.
So if I am rebuilding might as well do it on new hardware.
What about the Operating System? Well Vista seems to have issues with SQL Server 2005, so I plan to use XP and perhaps upgrade later. So the hardware has to be Vista Compatible.
When I install the software I will not intall Homesite. Instead I will be putting in the new version of CFEclipse. As a long term Homesite user I think it will be better not to install Homesite. I'll blog more about the learning curve and let you know how I get on.
Last night I went to Point 101 with Andy Allen who is sitting in on my Fast Track to ColdFusion Class to see how it is done. He is hoping to get authorised to teach FTCF in the North of England and Scotland. Andy was telling me how much work is involved with organising a conference.
There were a few others along for the evening and I spent some time talking to Mark Drew about his dislike of cfscript and the problems of giving up smoking, and to Peter Bell about code generation and some of the ideas I have for ColdFusion Scaffolding. I will blog later at length when my ideas are better formed. It was good to meet Peter for the first time and we have made aplan to meet up again at the Frameworks conference in Washington next month.
There were a few others there including Nic Richardson and Kev McCabe. A very pleasant evening.
