Walking on AIR

In this case AIR is the new name for Apollo. AIR stands for Adobe Integrated Runtime. It is now starting to get good press and this article from InfoWord shows.

AIR is supposed allow programs to run on multiple platforms and it does that by allowing Flex based programs to run using the installed Flash player on the machines in question.

Sean Corfield's Gravatar AIR application do not use the installed Flash player. AIR is a separate runtime that is downloaded which allows AIR applications to run. It supports both Flash/Flex applications and HTML/JS applications - it contains WebKit, the core rendering engine behind Safari.

Right now, beta users need to download and install AIR separately once and then AIR applications can be installed. Adobe have said that in the future, the runtime (AIR) may be auto-installed the first time you try to install an AIR application.

AIR is a very, very exciting development for programmers familiar with web technologies!

Kevin's Gravatar Thanks for putting me straight on that. I guess I should have realised but I forgot about that thing I install way back weeks ago.
